Paris Breizh

I have always been very suspicious of savory pancakes. Especially tuna ones. Sweet pancakes are the stuff of childhood dreams, but throw an unexpected bit of fish in there and the whole thing becomes a briny, spongy disaster. One of my colleagues just saw my face while I was writing the above and thought I looked so troubled, she asked if anything was wrong. Well, tuna pancakes; that’s what wrong. Anyway, as you can imagine, crêpes of all varieties are pretty popular in Paris, and I’ve been making an effort to come to terms with the fact that a lot … Continue reading Paris Breizh

Ladurée

Obviously, Ladurée. I can’t believe I’ve neglected to mention Ladurée for so long, but unless you’ve been living under a rock shouting ‘I hate desserts, go away’, you would know they made macaroons. And there is probably no point in me telling you how good those beautiful crisp little shells of almond-y perfection are – biting in as it yields to its creamy centre: Just go and buy a box (head to Printemps) and if you need to make yourself feel better about it, pretend they’re for a gift (from you to you, obviously). Better still, go with a friend, … Continue reading Ladurée

Berko

I know that everyone in Paris is going crazy for bagels at the moment, but let’s sideline that for a moment, and remember cupcakes. And cheesecake. And for cupcakes in Paris, you need to go to Berko, in Le Marais. It’s more a takeaway place than a café, but you can fit six or so inside perched on high chairs, and there are two small tables outside for when the sun peeks its little head out. Cupcakes and cheeseckaes are lined up in delicious little rows and they have so many flavours that even if you pick a couple to share, you still feel sad that … Continue reading Berko

Amorino

Obviously, ice cream. I mean, that’s what Amorino is famous for. All the ice cream. And you can ask for at least three flavours, even if you get the smallest size, and they’ll still make it look like a flower! It’s the little things. I’m partial to hazelnut and mango but not together, obviously, you monster. Watch out for the featured flavour – I’m still sad I missed the tarte au pomme one. And don’t mix sorbet and ice cream. Also, don’t neglect Amorino’s other sweet treats. They also do waffles and the most incredible hot chocolate, which comes almost … Continue reading Amorino
