35 Tours

35 Tours is Experimental Cocktail Club’s cheaper, bobo-ier next door neighbour. Instead of swanky cocktails, there are international beers, very drinkable wines, and the bathroom is checked out with black chalkboard paint so you can scribble on the walls. Fun! Outside is covered in records, the inside is covered in rave art – think psychedelic coloured giant eyes and noses – the downstairs cave has to be seen to be believed, and this is where the DJ sets up camp from Thursday to Saturday nights. It’s still kinda stylé, but then we are in the 2e. Happy hour is 18h … Continue reading 35 Tours

La Cordonnerie

La Cordonnerie is a popular drinking haunt that makes up part of the strip of cheap bars that run along rue Saint-Denis. It gets particularly rammed on Thursdays and Saturdays where, if you manage to wangle yourself a seat, you’ll be presented, unprompted, with a plate of free couscous, which comes served with meat, potatoes and vegetables. The music is cheesy, verging on the mildly amusing – Whitney Houston and Bryan Adams are particular favourites, which the French locals love, and also love to sing along to. It’s dingy and dive-y of course, but you can’t really complain here, as the drinks are … Continue reading La Cordonnerie

Le Truskel

Any musician I come across is always obsessed with Le Truskel. My friend L and his band were gigging in Paris and were all set on going; it’s just become one of those hangouts. Add to that the fact that Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Jarvis Cocker and Peter Doherty are amongst the famous names and bands who have DJed here, and the venue definitely fulfils your dark and grungy indie bar needs. Music wise, it’s indie rock, with the likes of Gossip, The Cure, Arcade Fire and Oasis. There’s a small dancefloor next to the DJ booth (the cloakroom is open at … Continue reading Le Truskel

Lina’s Beautiful Sandwich

There’s something a little intriguing about a place that describes its sandwiches as ‘beautiful’, but, strangely, it’s just the right word for Lina’s Beautiful Sandwich. I think it’s something to do with the bread. And I have nothing against a fabulously crunchy baguette: just sometimes it’s nice to have something a bit different. Please don’t tell anyone I said that. They offer pre-made sandwiches, but you can also mix and match ingredients to your taste, which is better, obvs. There are also some excellent salads (the caesar is great, especially as they don’t go too heavy on the leaves, but … Continue reading Lina’s Beautiful Sandwich

O’Sullivans

I hate this place. I’m sorry, but I really hate it. I would rather go home than go here. What’s weird is that I am often alone in my hatred. Some of my friends loooooove O’Sullivans, and whenever they want to go, I just want to cry. Or go home. Or both. I guess no city would be complete without an Irish pub. But if you want an Irish pub, go to The Green Goose. However, if you insist on going because…I don’t know? You like paying 10€ for the privilege of getting crushed listening to truly terrible club and chart … Continue reading O’Sullivans

Harry’s New York Bar

Sometimes you need to treat yo self. Especially if you’ve been drinking badly made mojitos for the best part of several months/years. So for cocktails made by people who actually really know what they’re doing, you need to go back to the source of where they came from: Harry’s New York Bar. It’s the place where cocktails such as the Bloody Mary, Side Car, French 75 and The Monkey Gland actually originated, and first opened way back in 1911 (minus the ‘Harry’s’ prefix), making it Paris’ oldest cocktail bar. There’s a smiling hostess who’ll greet you at the door and, once you’re inside, … Continue reading Harry’s New York Bar
